Skincare Sunday: Dewy Cel CICA Plus Balm

Bodysuit (H+M) | Shorts (J.Crew)

Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful weekend. The weather was so amazing compared to last weekend’s heatwave! And for that I am thankful.

If you can’t tell by my inverse raccoon eyes, I spent the whole weekend in the sun reading and it was so, so, so delightful but so counter-active to my normal skincare regimen. While I slather on sunscreen (my favorite is currently on sale via Nordstrom) while I’m baking in the sun, I know my pre- and post-sun routine is just as important.

This weekend, I tested out a new product called CICA Plus Blam from a brand I never heard of called Dewy Cel. Dewy Cel is a new concept based on plant stem cell ingredients and it aims to have a skin regeneration effect. The plant components of the product have antibacterial, healing, moisturizing and soothing, effects, making this product perfect for that post-sun glow.

What I Love: Overall, I love the intense action this product takes. I honestly feel like it completely rejuvenates my face overnight, which is a testament to the product’s rich list of ingredients. Specifically, in the summer, I feel like using this product after being in the sun all day helps my face look fresh and dewy instead of burnt and swollen.

The Watchouts: While this product is super lightweight and doesn’t feel heavy on your skin whatsoever, I do feel like it can sometimes feel sticky when you apply it. At first, I thought I may have been using the product wrong and it was more of a face wash, but after a few minutes (~15), the stickiness dissolves and your skin is left super smooth.

What are your post-sun skincare regimen? Would love to hear them in the comments. 👇

6 Year Blogiversary!

Dress (Red Dress Boutique) | Bag (Stella & Dot) | Sandles (Jack Rogers)

Well, today’s a big day!! Today marks six years since I launched the first post here on ThePreppyMAG. It’s certainly been a crazy six years of fun and unexpected opportunities. When I first launched this blog, I had no idea where it would go. I just thought it was a fun place to document all of my outfits before jumping on the Long Island Railroad and heading to my fashion internship in the big city. Fast forward six years and I’m living in that city and this blog is the last remaining evidence of any fashion career. 😂

Ironically, my first post was called Gossip Girl Inspired, featuring a high-waisted crape J.Crew skirt, a button-up shirt, my signature hair bow and of course an Haute 2013 statement necklace. I’d be lying if I said I still didn’t secretly love this outfit. 😍 That said, this post is truly a blast to the past, the poor quality photography, my parent’s front yard as a backdrop, and C.Wonder, it was truly a time to be alive!

The influencer industry has changed 10-fold and it’s become much more than I ever imagined when I hit publish on that Gossip Gil post. Throughout the last six years, this blog has brought me so much happiness. It has been so exciting to have a creative outlet where I can express myself, continue my interest in fashion as well as build a strong community of little prepsters. However, within the six years, I almost shut ThePreppyMAG down 3 times due to fear of failure and frustration for not growing as fast as I wanted to. Of course, I wish that I was able to grow faster, but now I have so much more perspective on what it really takes to succeed in the blogosphere. For now, I’m just proud of what I’ve built so far while graduating from Boston University, working a full-time job in social marketing, building my life here in NYC, building relationships that matter to me and even becoming a dog mom!

In honor of ThePreppyMAG’s blogiversary, I’m sharing a few fan and personal favorite posts throughout the years. Can’t wait to hear what your favorites are in the comments! 😍

Your Favorite Posts Through The Years

1| What I Wore: The Billy Joel Concert. This one always cracks me up. I wrote this the first time I went to the Billy Joel concert in 2014 (yes, I already have been a second time) and every time Billy Joel plays in NYC, this post sees a spike in views.

2| How to Find That Perfect Formal Dress. Just a few short months after launching ThePreppyMAG, I had an opportunity to work with In The Pink (a Lilly Pulitzer signature store in Boston), it was a dream come true and ever since I’ve been wishing for another opportunity to work with Lilly. I was definitely naive in how crazy this opportunity was! All I did was DM the store on Twitter! 😂

3| Dressing For the Occasion. I vividly remember the day this post became a top-performer! I was on winter break from college and I seriously considered whether or not this whole blogging thing could be a full-time gig post-graduation.

4| Snow Bunny Chic in Stratton, VT. Y’all just love the view of Stratton, Mountain! Every time I post a post in this location, my stats go bananas. This was also the first time I shared my obsession with SPANX leggings (No, they did not just come out this year in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 🙄).

5| Dubli: What It Is And Why You Need To Be Using It. You guys are a bunch of shopaholics always looking for a good deal! Thankfully, I partnered with Dubli this past winter to give you the gif that is Dubli.

My Favorite Posts Through The Years

1| ThePreppyMAG Boutique Is Open. The day I opened my online boutique was truly magical. This was one of my biggest goals with the blog and it was so rewarding and emotional to finally see it come to life.

2| Spring Must-Haves. This was the first time I ever used a professional photographer and it felt freaking amazing. I was so uncomfortable posing for someone who wasn’t Tom or my Mom but Allie was (and still is) so amazing to work with and made me feel instantly comfortable.

3| New York Style of Mind. This is that Gossip Girl post all grown up. Goodbye iPhone photos and mom & dad’s front yard scenery, hello professional photography and Central Park.

4| Dear Tom, Happy 6 Year Anniversary. This year, I wrote an open letter to Tom for our anniversary. It’s not a coincidence that my romantic and blog anniversaries are aligned, Tom actually came up with the name ‘ThePreppyMAG’ and encouraged me every step of the way.

5| Ballet Inspired. This post always made me feel like my Carrie Bradshaw dreams came true. Not only does it check the boxes on all things ‘NYC blogger,’ (Pink tulle ✔️ Sparkes ✔️ Washington Square Park Arch ✔️ Taxi cabs ✔️) it was the first post ever that I had access to Reward Style (also know as LIKEtoKNOW.it) and that felt pretty monumental.

Now that I’m FULLY nostalgic and feeling all of the feels, I wanted to thank all of you beautiful people for reading ThePreppyMAG for all this time, buying from my little rinky-dink boutique, following along on my social media channels and so much more. Without you this would all be NOTHING. Love you, mean it! 😘

How To Beat Burnout

Happy Monday! We made it through a VERY hot weekend here in NYC so I’m actually kind of excited to spend the week in the comfort of highly my air-conditioned office. Is that a sign of my workaholicism? Speaking of being a workaholic, today we’re talking about a very sensitive but relevant topic, burnout.

Before we get into it, I have a few disclaimers: 1) I honestly love working so burnout is sometimes always self-inflicted. 2) I essentially work two jobs– full-time as a social strategist at 360i and my blog/boutique side hustle. I find this context necessary because I think advertising agencies get a bad rap for driving burnout and this isn’t one of those stories.

If you haven’t experienced burnout, let me give you the rundown. Burnout is when you start getting negative about the job that you normally love, making you feel less motivated in not only your job but potentially other parts of your life (working out, your relationships, etc.). Maybe you’ve spent a few more hours at the office than you wanted, maybe you’ve sacrificed too much of your life for the sake of your job, or maybe you just don’t feel like you’ve had a ‘win’ lately. These are usually the reasons that start making me feel a little burnt out.

As I mentioned, I love working and I always have. Throughout my life, this love of work has manifested in various ways. In high school, being a workaholic meant taking as many AP classes that I was qualified for, being the captain of my cheerleading team, the choreographer of the school musical and being on a competitive dance team. In college, I always took at least 20 credits (when the average for a BU student was 16), I was on my sorority’s e-board, and had a PR internship every semester. Now, I throw my entire self into my job and with whatever’s left of me, I work on this little blog of mine (and then there is the boutique during the holidays). Unfortunately, burnout isn’t a new feeling for me. I remember vividly the first time I experienced it. It was during AP testing season, which also overlapped with dance competition season. My daily ritual of studying index cards while stretching in the studio or waiting for ‘Group A’ to finish their pirouette sequence was suddenly extremely overwhelming and for a few days afterwards I had no motivation to study for my tests, show up to my dance classes, eat dinner with my family, I even took my first ‘Mental Health’ day from school (shattering my perfect attendance record).

While I’m definitely not a pro at ‘beating’ burnout and struggle with it on the regular, I have definitely learned a few tricks along the way that I wanted to share with you all.

1| Take A Day. As soon as you start to feel burnout creeping up, take a day off. This is probably one of the BIGGEST mistakes I make time-after-time. I’m always so harsh on myself when it comes to PTO. I plan a certain number of vacations and stick to the plan, but sometimes you need to take a day after trudging through a hard project or maybe just a really hard week.

2| Change Up Your Routine. Sometimes the burn comes from the grind itself. It’s so easy to fall into certain habits and routine when you do the same things day-in and day-out. While I love my morning routine of taking Duncan out in the morning, picking up Starbucks on my way to work, listening to my favorite podcasts on my commute, tracking my goals the moment I get to work, heading to my same 10a meeting, making sure all of my emails are read and answered before I leave the office, calling my mom on my commute home, making dinner, catching up on 1 episode of my favorite TV show, etc., etc., etc. While this is definitely a routine that works for me, when I start to feel burnout a mix-up is 100% necessary. Walk to work instead of taking the train, grab a smoothie instead of Starbucks, catch a Soul Cycle class before work, all of these things will help you feel a little bit more ready to take on the day.

3| Spend Time With Friends & Family. THIS. THIS helps put everything into perspective. In my case, my closest friends and family don’t even live in the city so it is refreshing to talk about things that are completely outside of my world. I love hearing about everyone else’s drama and what they are dealing with, it helps me understand that the amount of work I have and my crazy deadlines really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

4| Say ‘Not Now.’ I’m not going to be the one to be like, ‘just say no to things that are outside your bandwidth’ because you know that’s not realistic. Even if you aren’t 100% interested in the task at hand you can probably learn from it so when you are feeling stretched too thin say ‘Not Now,’ this helps set the expectation that 1) you are capable of managing your own time and 2) that you are interested in learning or helping out in the future.

5| Prioritize What Matters Most. It’s so easy to get caught up in the minutia of things and next thing you know, the day is over and you got nothing done. Every day when I get into work, I set three priorities for the day. Sometimes those priorities are work-related and sometimes they are to make doctor’s appointments or make it to my workout class. Documenting these priorities help you start the day understanding what matters most to you and gets you to gameplan the rest of your day to make sure those things happen (and you feel personally rewarded).

Now, there is no secret formula to beating burnout. This is what has worked for me but everyone and every burnout is different. I’d love to hear how you’ve personally beat burnout, I’m always desperate for a few more tips.

Skincare Sunday: Biossance Eye Cream & Serum

fullsizeoutput_407

Happy Sunday! It’s been a minute since I last shared a skincare review here and I’m back with one that I’m L-O-V-I-N-G! Biossance is a brand that has been on my radar for a while as I know they are one of the most sustainable and clean skincare brands out there. Specifically, among the squalane oil product craze, Biossance uses plant-based squalane while others are sourced from sharks.

Today, I’m sharing two Biossance products that I was recently sent. The first, a Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum that aims to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and the second, a Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream, which visibly lifts, firms and smooths the look of skin.

As always, see below for what I’m loving and the watch-outs.

fullsizeoutput_3d7

What I Loved: Both of these products are winners! Let’s start with the eye cream, if you’ve been reading my reviews over the last few months, you know that I’m a fan of products that I can feel working almost immediately. This eye cream is one of those products (and in 7 days you’ll actually start to see fine lines start to disappear). As soon as you put this cream on you feel your skin tightening in a really satisfying way. In addition to the tightening effect, the cream is also extremely lucious which is definitely a reason enough for me to slather it on before I go to bed and each morning before makeup.

After the eye cream, it’s time for the serum. This serum isn’t like other serums. I’m used to serums with an oil consistency and this one was actually creamy, which was very exciting for someone who can sometimes have oily skin (🙋🏻‍♀️). In addition to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, this product has also been helpful in evening out my skin tone (especially in the Summer when it is a constant struggle).

The Watch Outs: The only thing wrong with this product is the price tag. While I’m 100% a fan of getting what you pay for, it’s hard to splurge on a $54 eye cream or a $72 serum when there are so many other great products on the market. While I will likely buy this product myself (it’s addictive), I’ll likely go for the travel-sized portions (~$29).
